In Moral Ground, Sheila Watt-Cloutier argues that climate change must be treated as an international human rights threat. The Inuit attempted this approach in 2005, and she emphasized that our personal connection to the Earth must be reestablished for us to feel a moral obligation to protect it. The world leaders must be willing to invest money into fixing and protecting the Earth’s climate, which can begin with just one person standing up for better environmental care. Some leaders continue to doubt the effects of climate change, but awareness has been spreading, thanks to a plethora of organizations like the ones listed below.
350.org is an organization passionate about reducing the carbon footprint and raising awareness of climate change. 350 is named for the 350 parts per million of the recommended safe concentration of carbon dioxide in Earth’s atmosphere. According to the 350 website, there is no record of climate change strikes happening in Cambodia currently. There is a nearby strike happening in Vietnam, but the Asian continent overall is sparser than the western world in terms of climate change strikes.
Water.org, an organization aimed to provide developing countries with easy access to clean water, has been involved in Cambodia since 2014. Water.org reports that about 4 million people in Cambodia lack access to clean water, due to the large portion of the population living in rural areas.
In the video below, Matt Damon describes how the need for water has an impact on girls’ education. Many women and girls are tasked with retrieving water, which does not leave enough time to go to school. By providing closer access to water, unnecessary time does not need to be spent collecting water.
Save Cambodia’s Wildlife is the prominent organization in Cambodia aimed at protecting natural resources and wildlife habitats throughout the nation. SCW is a not-for-profit and was registered in 2002. There are several other NGOs in the region with the same mission to protect wildlife which has recently come under threat with an increase in deforestation. The NGOs pose a threat to the government approving deforestation, but unfortunately, deforestation is still continuing.
